FIRE RESCUE EMS MILITARY
I have been fascinated by aviation as long as I can remember. Some of my earliest memories are of old TV shows that featured airplanes and helicopters. Other kids may have dreamed about being cowboys. I dreamed about being a pilot. But, it was not to be. My eyesight was too bad.
Still, I loved aviation and joined the Civil Air Patrol in high school. As the auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, one of its missions was search and rescue of missing civilian aircraft. CAP had a huge impact on my life. It introduced me to emergency services and give me some life-long friends. This is also where I began photographing aircraft.
I became an Emergency Medical Technician in 1977 and went to work for an ambulance service. In 1980, I became a paramedic and worked for 22 years in Santa Clara County in northern California. In 2002, I moved to Reno, Nevada, to work as a paramedic for the Regional EMS Authority(REMSA). I also became heavily involved teaching with its Education Department.
I continued with photography and began writing magazine articles, most on emergency services of all types. Over the years, I have published six books and over 200 magazine articles. I have always had an intense curiosity about how things work. I like to find out the back story of the people, equipment, and organizations involved in emergency services. I want to put the reader on scene with the crews of the ambulances, rescue vehicles, helicopters, and aircraft that I write about.
In 2010, I left full-time employment with REMSA to pursue my writing and photography. I still work for the Education Department, on a part-time basis, teaching medical courses to EMTs, paramedics, and nurses. I have been lucky enough to be able to make a living doing the things that I love.
